Calibration versus verification

Calibration establishes the relationship between a machine's indications and a reference value, with a stated uncertainty. What most buyers order is a performance verification against ISO/IEC 17025:2017-aligned criteria, or against ASME B89.4.1 by customer preference.

Both are handled the same way here: geometric adjustment where indicated, error-map compensation where the controller permits it, and a certificate that states what was actually done.

What a visit covers

The same sequence applies whether the result is destined for an acceptance test or a routine reverification, and no step is shortened for either one.

  • 01

    Scale and reader head

X, Y and Z scales are cleaned and inspected; reader head output is checked and adjusted.

  • 02

    Air bearings and airlines

Bearing condition and supply air quality are checked before any geometric test proceeds.

  • 03

    Geometry

Straightness, linearity and squareness are checked in the XY, ZX and ZY planes.

  • 04

    Length measurement error

E0 and E1 tested per ISO 10360-2, 105 measurements across five lengths and seven positions.

  • 05

    Probing error

PFTU tested on a calibrated reference sphere separate from the probe qualification sphere, per ISO 10360-5.

Sequence of work

  • 01

    As-found

Geometry and length error are recorded before any adjustment is made.

  • 02

    Adjustment

Kinematic errors and squareness are corrected where the machine allows it.

  • 03

    Compensation

Volumetric error map is updated on controllers where OEM access permits.

  • 04

    As-left

Full verification is repeated and results are issued on certificate.

Why Indianapolis CMM Calibration and Repair

  • 01

    As-found is never skipped

Impact assessment back to the last passing calibration depends on it.

  • 02

    Repair and verification together

Probe, scale, air bearing and drive repair are followed by re-verification, not assumed.

  • 03

    Environment checked first

Thermal soak and gradient are confirmed before test lengths are measured.
